Hi, my name is Shea and I'm the person behind Open Arms Doula. My first experience with birth was at a very young age; my sister was born in our home when I was 9. I remember watching the midwife and thinking wow, I want to do this when I grow up. As an adult, I graduated from a 3000 hour clinical massage therapy program in 2018 and went on to work in a prenatal massage clinic. I worked with a lot of pregnant women and began thinking about birth work again. I realized that my heart lies more in a support role and looked into becoming a birth doula. Over the next few years I jumped right in, taking training in any and everything. I started with Birth Doula training, followed by a When Survivors Give Birth seminar, becoming an LCCE (Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator) and my Postpartum Doula training. I love learning and I don't see myself slowing anytime soon. I've been working with Calgary families since early 2019 and am incredibly passionate about ensuring that families have all of the support and evidence based information that they need to have a positive birth and postpartum experience.
I am passionate about facilitating a positive and empowering birth experience, whatever that means for you. As your doula and childbirth educator, my goal is to provide unbiased, evidence based, empowering support during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. As your doula, I support all births, regardless of your birth preferences (vaginal, cesarean, medicated, non-medicated, home birth, hopsital, etc). I specialize in emotional support techniques and physical comfort measures. To schedule a meet and greet, or to learn more about my services, please contact me.
Prenatal & Postpartum Visits
I am committed to learning your preferences and concerns to help you build a birth plan that suits your needs. I'm also an RMT, so I offer massage for both you and your partner as an add on. During your pregnancy I am available for emotional support and can help you gather information and resources that you may need. I’m always available to contact by phone/email. After the birth, I offer 1-2 postpartum visits where I can offer basic breastfeeding help, check in with you, and get feedback on my role as your doula.
During your labour and birth, I will offer constant support, both emotionally and with physical comfort measures. During our prenatal visits we can discuss your preferences and come up with ways to effectively help you through the delivery of your baby. Ensuring that your partner feels included in the experience is important to me; I am not there to replace them. I can help your partner support you during labour and trade off with them if they need short breaks. At the end of the day, I am here to support both of you in this new chapter of your lives.
"Whenever and however you give birth, your experience will impact your emotions, your mind, your body, and your spirit for the rest of your life."
